About Aranmula Vallam Kali

The oldest and most revered river boat festival in Kerala, held annually on the Pampa River near the Sree Parthasarathy Temple. Unlike other competitive boat races, the Aranmula Vallam Kali is a ritualistic offering to the main deity, Lord Krishna, using the unique, revered snake boats called 'Palliyodams.' It is closely tied to the Onam festival and the legendary 'Thiruvona Thoni' (divine boat) procession.

കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പഴക്കമേറിയതും ആചാരപരവുമായ ജലമേളയാണ് ആറന്മുള വള്ളംകളി. പത്തനംതിട്ട ജില്ലയിലെ ആറന്മുള ശ്രീ പാർത്ഥസാരഥി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് സമീപമുള്ള പുണ്യനദിയായ പമ്പാനദിയിലാണ് ഇത് നടക്കുന്നത്. ഓണം സീസണിലാണ് (ചിങ്ങമാസത്തിലെ ഉതൃട്ടാതി നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ) ഈ ഉത്സവം നടക്കുന്നത്. മറ്റ് വള്ളംകളി മത്സരങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമായി, ഇത് പ്രധാനമായും ആറന്മുളയപ്പനായ ശ്രീ കൃഷ്ണ ഭഗവാനുള്ള വഴിപാടാണ്. പള്ളിയോടങ്ങൾ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന 50-ഓളം ആചാരപരമായ ചുണ്ടൻവള്ളങ്ങളാണ് ഇതിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നത്. തിരുവോണനാളിൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് ഓണസദ്യക്കുള്ള വിഭവങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്ന ഐതിഹ്യപരമായ 'തിരുവോണത്തോണി'ക്ക് രക്ഷാകവചം തീർക്കാൻ ചുറ്റുമുള്ള കരക്കാർ വള്ളങ്ങളുമായി വന്നതിൻ്റെ ഓർമ്മ പുതുക്കലാണ് ഈ വള്ളംകളി.

The race commemorates the time when Palliyodams from neighboring 'Karas' (villages) rushed to protect the 'Thiruvona Thoni,' the divine boat carrying the provisions for the Onam feast (Vallasadya) to the temple, from being attacked by bandits. The race is thus a spiritual offering.

The festival is over a century old and is linked to the anniversary of the idol's installation at the Parthasarathy Temple. The Palliyodams (Snake boats) are revered as the divine vehicles of the deity.

The **Vallasadya** is a unique, grand vegetarian feast offered to the Palliyodam oarsmen, which is a major part of the ritual.
